Michael Garfield

Paleontologist-futurist Michael Garfield is a midwife to a new myth – helping to articulate our emergent planetary culture and integrate art, science, and philosophy in a new way suited to our accelerating age.

As a writer at the intersection of evolutionary biology and creativity, and as host of Future Fossils Podcast, Michael helps map our place in the landscape of deep time and our role as ancestors-in-training.

As a musician, Michael’s avant-guitar has opened hearts and minds across four continents - in caves, museums, jungles, tea houses, yoga classes, and both electronic and folk music festivals. His music has been featured on documentary soundtracks and podcasts; in weddings, lovemaking, and childbirth; and the FDA’s clinical trials for MDMA as a treatment for PTSD.

As an artist, Michael’s verdant and exultant work draws inspiration from his years as scientific illustrator and his adventures in live painting everywhere from Burning Man to NASA-Ames to the Australian Outback. In addition to countless festival appearances and art directorships since 2007, he's held residencies in Boulder, Denver, Phoenix, Kansas City, New Orleans, Austin, and Santa Fe.

Future Fossils is podcast for the bold and curious to help you navigate our world's accelerating weirdness — about science and the philosophy of it, prehistory and post-humanity and deep time, non-human agency and non-duality, science fiction and the stories we regard as real, complex systems and sustainability (or lack thereof), psychedelics as a form of training for a weirding present and proliferating futures, art and creativity as service and as inquiry. Join paleontologist-futurist Michael Garfield every other week for deep but irreverent discussions on the biggest questions we can think to ask — and even deeper mysteries beyond what’s thinkable.
